Why "Attuned"?

Updated: Aug 20

Words are powerful. They can build us up and destroy us.

Words are powerful. They can build us up and destroy us. A book, a song, even a powerful quote have brought words to people that have touched and even changed lives. When I thought about a name for my practice, I wanted to find words that describe how I approach the work and what I believe is necessary for healing to occur.

I kicked around ideas like "Renew & Restore", which was also a play on the phrase "R and R". The idea that people could come to a session with me for some "much needed R and R" sounded nice. But, it didn't express my love for this work or how I go about it. I thought some more and realized that I tend to trust my instincts and intuition with the people I serve. Relying on my intuition requires me to constantly attune to myself and the person I share time and space with.

I wanted to find words that describe how I approach the work and what I believe is necessary for healing to occur.

So, I Googled the word "attuned" and its definition perfectly described how I approach the work, the connection between myself and my client, and their process. To attune means to become aware and responsive. As a therapist, I must be aware of and respond to many things - how I affect my clients, how they affect me, how my clients' experiences affect them and their ways of moving in the world.

"Attuned" also means being able to recognize and come into harmony with something or someone. When we can recognize something we can consider what parts of it we can affect. When we are in harmony we are also in agreement. An effective therapeutic relationship develops harmony between me and my clients.

"Attuned" also means being able to recognize and come into harmony with something or someone.

This helps us to recognize and agree on the steps (interventions and goals) that we need to take to create a beautiful dance. This dance can increase their awareness to respond to what they can affect in their lives and create harmony between their internal and external worlds.
